Stuart Leonard is a British racing driver competing with the Audi R8 LMS GT3 and ended 2017 as the Blancpain Sprint Series Drivers Champion. In his opening race of 2018 for Audi Sport Team WRT Leonard won the challenging Bathurst 12 Hour; this victory gained on his first attempt is also significant as the first overall win by a British driver.
Leonard joined Audi with Team WRT in 2015, Leonard won outright at the Sepang 12 Hour, followed by a win at the 2016 Dubai 24 Hour; significantly the first-ever Audi victory at this event. These victories make Leonard the most successful British Audi driver in GT3 competition to-date.
Leonard came to GT racing through a different route to his peers with their lengthy apprenticeships in karting and formula race cars. A life-long motorsport fan, Leonard turned his dreams of getting behind the wheel into reality relatively late in life whilst working towards a degree in International Financial Management. It was only in 2012 that Leonard started in circuit racing taking podiums and a win in his opening season in the Caterham Tracksport category but was unable to compete for the championship due to University commitments. However, he soon demonstrated his potential by claiming second on points for the top Caterham R300 (now 420R) championship; this outstanding result being achieved in just his first full season of competitive motorsport.
From those humble beginnings, it wasn’t long before Leonard expanded his horizons and headed to the world-renowned Nürburgring Nordschleife to contest the VLN Endurance Series. The ‘Green Hell’ is well-renowned as the best proving ground of them all and it wasn’t long before Leonard was ready to face the Blancpain Endurance Cup, initially racing in the Pro-Am class in an Aston Martin Vantage GT3. After a toe-in-the-water campaign in 2014, Leonard took his first win on home soil at Silverstone in 2015 before moving to Audi.
